I spray painted mine gold; if you're using wood or cardboard, I would recommend using a white spray primer first so that you can get the brightest, truest color (which can be found at a hardware store). I also used spray glitter (a craft store staple), since I put glitter on just about everything; if you do go that route, use a clear sealer spray to keep the glitter from falling off.
Give your surface a good spray and let dry, and then add another coat. This is particularly important for metallic sprays, because one coat usually doesn't evoke the full luster.
